Fire Protection
The prime purpose of a fire door is to protect lives and provide compartmentalised protection to the remainder of the building and surrounding structures. A high-quality locking system is a vital component of a fire doorset assembly and ensures the door leaf is properly restrained within the frame for as long as possible to resist the passage of flames and smoke.
MICO high-performance locking systems are well-suited to this application and have proven their ability to perform in the event of a fire. Several MICO single- and multi-point locking devices have successfully achieved the maximum 4-hour fire integrity duration in accordance with the latest British and European Standard EN 1634-1 when tested with our OEM partner’s doorsets.
In addition, very few fire-resistant doorsets can deliver high levels of physical attack resistance and blast performance within one solution. This is because the engineering requirements for fire safety and security often oppose each other.
High-security locking systems designed for resistance often feature large, deep-throw bolts and multi-point engagement to resist forced entry attempts or blast pressure. But fire standards require the opposite—low operating forces and immediate single-action escape.
Despite this conflict, integrity and fire safety should not be mutually exclusive.
Our fire-resistant locking systems can deliver unparalleled resistance to forced entry attempts. Tested and certified to LPS 1175 and LPS 1673, these solutions will withstand determined attacks without compromising safe escape in an emergency.
Our fire-tested locking systems can also be specified on fire escape doors to ensure swift single-action to escape (SATE) operation when an alarm is raised. These locks can be fitted with either an escape lever handle, push pad or panic bar device and are fully compliant with prominent safety standards and regulations.
MICO access-controlled locking systems can be specified with fail-safe or fail-secure functionality.
Fail safe locks unlock when power is interrupted by an access control system alarm or a power outage. These systems are often used for life safety applications such as access control of perimeter fire-rated exit doors and high-rise building stairwell doors, where the locks are automatically released by a signal from the building fire life safety command centre during an emergency or building power outage.
Fail secure locks remain locked when an alarm is sounded or during a building power outage. These systems are typically used for high-security applications and are not suitable for fire-rated doors because they do not unlock during an emergency or power loss.
